Start with HTTPS
An SSL/TLS certificate helps encrypt traffic between your visitors and your website. Check that HTTPS works across the site and that page resources also use secure URLs. Encryption is one layer of protection, not a guarantee that a website is free of vulnerabilities.
Protect access
Use unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication wherever it is available. Give each person only the access they need. Remove accounts when they are no longer required.
Maintain the application
Keep your CMS, plugins and themes on supported versions. Test significant updates before applying them to a business-critical website. Remove unused software to reduce the components you have to maintain.
Back up for recovery
For database-driven sites, files alone are not enough. Your recovery plan needs the corresponding database and a restore procedure. Agree retention periods and restore access with your host, and keep an independent copy where appropriate.
Make checks routine
Review access, updates and backups on a schedule. If an incident occurs, preserve useful information and contact support rather than repeatedly changing settings without a plan.
